Gemütlichkeit

Gemütlichkeit is one of those words that simply doesn’t have a clear translation to the English language. And yet, it’s been one of my favorite words since I learned so many years ago . German speaking people describe a complex layering of warmth, comfort, and companionship in a single word. You’ve felt it when you lose track of time having a beer with friends after a long day at your favorite spot. You’ve felt it when playing a board game with family because the weather outside provides few other options. You’ve felt it in that quiet moment after the holiday commotion where everyone is content with a book and a tea or a slightly stronger drink. You’ve felt it in solidarity with brothers and sisters in the face of adversity.

So, one of my favorite words is also one of my favorite feelings. Go figure.
